About VHS Bands:
The Venice High School Band program is a proud member of the Venice High School Performing Arts Department. The Band program is comprised of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble and the Marching Indians. The Ensembles of the VHS Band Programs perform music of the highest caliber at all performances and events. The Band program prepares students for a variety of musical and non musical skills, opportunities and life changing experiences. The ensembles in the Band program maintain a busy performance schedule each year, performing at Music Performance Assessments, Concerts, Parades, Football Games and Competitions, and other community and fundraising events. The Band program has earned accolades at the District and State level in all its years in existence and is a staple and source of pride in the Venice community and in Southwest Florida.
Director of Bands- Mr. David Wing
Mr. Wing has been the Director of Bands at Venice High School since 2020. He received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Southeastern University in Lakeland Florida. In 2015, he completed his Masters Degree in Wind Band Conducting from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University.
In addition to his current position, he is also the District Chairperson for the FBA District 11 programs. He facilitates the district band programs and runs all MPA events in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, Hardee and Desoto Counties. He is also a certified FBA adjudicator in Concert Band, Sight-reading, Jazz and Solo and Ensemble Brass. He is an active adjudicator and All County Clinician throughout the state of Florida. Prior to his tenure at VHS, he served as the Director of Bands at Woodland MS in North Port, Florida where he taught 4 Concert Bands, 1 Jazz Band and had a robust solo and ensemble program. He had over 250+ students in his program each year. His Bands consistently earned Superior ratings at all Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessments and many of his students auditioned and were accepted into the All State Bands. Many of his students went on to high school band (in which he was actively involved), college and beyond. During his time at Woodland he was the Performing Arts Department Chair, PLC leader, voted Teacher of the Year in 2014, and participated in many district initiatives relating to the performing arts.
Mr. Wing is a member of the Florida Bandmasters Association, Florida Music Education Association, and the National Association of Music Education. As well as teaching all of the VHS Bands, Mr. Wing teaches International Baccalaureate Music. Mr. Wing plays trumpet as his principal instrument and performs at local churches, jazz ensembles and other groups. He has played with famous trumpet players and conductors including Doc Sevrinsen, Bobby Shew, Allen Vizutti, Frank Ticheli, Brian Balmages, Johann Demaij, Jan Van Der Roost, Frank Wickes and more. When Mr. Wing is not focused on Band or instrumental music, his hobbies including Disney, theme parks, traveling, eating and social media.
